Tour Information

What to wear:

Come prepared for a wee drop of rain and wear comfortable shoes – you don’t need walking boots. Our walks are on level ground (mostly on the pavement/sidewalk). However, if you've opted to visit McCaig's Tower then the route involves either steps up from street level via Jacob's Ladder or a steep incline which will require a good level of physical fitness and ability. Routes are all planned with your group in advance and if required one guide can include the walk to McCaig's Tower whilst another leads the low level walk.

What to bring:

Bring your camera or smart phone, there’s stunning scenery enroute.

Where to meet:

We usually meet at the Clock Tower between the two red roofed restaurants (Eeusk and Piazza) near the Harbour Building on North Pier (see map). We will begin our tour on North Pier.

We are happy to meet clients at any Oban hotel if that suits your group better - all details are agreed in advance.

Out of town walks may have alternative starting points and arrangements, for example we might meet your group at the Gallanach ferry if you're taking a guided hike to the Isle of Kerrera.

How long is the walk:

Our standard walk takes approximately 1 ½ hours. Please note, these times are for guidance only and your walk may take longer depending on the size of the group, the pace and weather conditions on the day. If you have a rigid schedule please let your guide know in advance. Guides can be booked for the morning, afternoon or full day.

Oban Vouchers

How much does it cost:

  • Our minimum price is £95 (which includes our booking fee) for our standard 90 minute walking tour.
  • Unless by prior arrangement, our standard town walking tour is priced for a maximum of 12 people with one guide. For larger groups we may need to split the group as Oban's pavements are small and the town can be busy in the summer season.
  • We offer a longer town tour (around 3 hours) to include both Dunollie and McCaig's Tower. The fee for this tour is £150 (including booking fee).
  • Isle of Kerrera tour fees are £250 and group size is limited to 10 per guide.
  • Dunstaffnage Castle tour is £95 - meeting the guide at the castle. We can also provide a guided walk from Oban to the Castle via the scenic path from Ganavan Sands at £150.
  • We can offer a wireless tour guide system for up to 50 people and 4 guides - additional charge of £25.

Language:

Please note: all tours are conducted in English - foreign language tours can be arranged and we have guides who can conduct tours in Spanish and German, however, advance notice is generally required so we can appoint a suitably qualified linguist to conduct your tour.

Family/School Groups:

We offer tailored itineraries for family groups and educational groups of school/college students. Please just let us know what date you have in mind and the number and ages of those involved and we'll arrange a suitable tour. Fill in the online enquiry form or email experiences@oban.org.uk for further information.

Themed Walks - our routes:

We can offer a variety of themed walks and tours. For example for the visiting Clipper Fleet this summer we're offering a Maritime Walk which will include access to the Norther Lighthouse Board pier.

Our Walking Tour of Kerrera island is better described as a hike and the walking route is on rough tracks and open fields. There are several steep inclines on Kerrera and to reach Gylen Castle requires nimble footwork and decent walking boots with a good grip. The walk is NOT considered suitable for anyone with mobility issues and requires a good level of general fitness. Please contact us for further details as there are several options once on the island depending on the time you have available, fitness levels, interests and weather.

Our standard Guided Oban Walking Tour takes approximately 90 minutes and covers around 1 ½ miles. This walk is level and mostly on paved paths.

The optional walk to McCaig's Tower via Jacob's Ladder involves steep inclines and many steps. Please request this route. If you have not booked a private tour then everyone on the walk must agree and be capable of climbing steps.

Individual guests are welcome to leave a tour at any point, but please let your guide know.

Please note, the time taken to complete any of the walking routes may vary depending on the size of the group, the weather and traffic conditions on the day. All times are approximate and the route may be adapted as required.
